A perfect example showcasing the flexibility of the mk portfolio of modular products!

Back in 2019, a customer purchased a balancing stand for vacuum pumps from mk, which they have since used for setting down and balancing rotors. During this process, the pump rotors rotate at several thousand revolutions per minute. Faulty or improperly balanced pumps can subject the balancing stand to massive torque forces. With this in mind, the stand needed to be robust and was therefore constructed using 60 series profiles and large-format 40 series profiles.

Now, five years later, the customer has introduced a new series of pumps to their portfolio that no longer fit the existing balancing stand. This meant they had to choose between acquiring a new balancing stand or retrofitting the existing one.

mk was able to retrofit the existing balancing stand to meet the new requirements. Thanks to the compatibility of the mk profile construction kit with the necessary components, the design modifications were straightforward. With access to the original CAD documents and mk’s expertise, the retrofit was carried out with ease. The design of the original stand was such that only a few parts required adaptation. The solid frame remained unchanged, and only the pump mounting was modified to accommodate the new series. This also provided an opportunity to enhance the stand’s ergonomics. Instead of the folding cover previously used to enclose the pumps for balancing, a sliding hood was installed. This hood can be manually positioned using a linear guide and is supported by two gas struts, making it easier to move.

By retaining around 80% of the original system, the retrofit saved the customer a five-figure sum compared to building a new stand, not to mention fulfilling their desire to adopt more sustainable practices.
