EMVCo Terminal Functional Type Approval
EMVCo established the Type Approval process for the testing and approval of payment acceptance devices in accordance with EMV Level 1 and Level 2 specification requirements. The contact and contactless terminal-chip card interfaces must be certified following the EMV Level 1 requirements, including electrical and protocol testing in the contact side, and analog and digital testing for contactless interfaces. Besides, terminal kernels must also go through official type approval. This Level 2 certification is managed by EMVCo for contact devices and by the specific schemes for contactless enabled terminals. UL offers dedicated test facilities for both pre-qualification and formal approval testing services. UL's accredited laboratories use EMVCo qualified testing tools and audited test platforms to perform testing against EMVCo Level 1 and Level 2 contact and contactless requirements. Definition Level 1 EMVCo Terminal Type Approval tests compliance with EMV specifications, providing an increased level of confidence that interoperability and consistent behavior between compliant applications are achieved. Benefits Contact and contactless terminals are now rapidly permeating the payment, transport and identity markets. UL is accredited to carry out formal EMVCo Level 1 certification. The contact interface of the terminal (also called Interface Module, IFM) needs to be certified, as defined in EMV Book 1/Part 1, including electrical and protocol testing. The contactless interface of the terminal also needs to be certified (as defined in EMV Book 1/Part 1), including analog and digital testing. The analog testing helps ensure contactless technologies are designed to comply with EMVCo radio frequency and load modulation requirements. It helps ensure that the magnetic field characteristics are able to carry communication. The digital testing encompasses Type A or Type B communication protocols testing. It helps ensure that the timing, anti-collision, and protocol characteristics are able to carry communication.
