MasterCard Contactless Reader Type Approval

Contactless payment terminals aiming to become certified by MasterCard must go through the required functional type approval program to demonstrate that their functionality complies with the MasterCard Contactless Reader specifications. The scope of this Mastercard type approval program is testing the level 2 contactless kernel of payment acceptance devices against MasterCard MCL latest specifications, allowing payment acceptance devices manufacturers to evaluate the functionality and characteristics of their terminal’s application. Beyond the verification of these functional requirements, additional requirements are evaluated by different means of testing; performance, combination and integration terminal testing. So MasterCard accredited third party laboratories, like UL, can also verify that a transaction is correctly performed within specified transaction times, across several selected positions inside the operating volume and using a comprehensive pool of different cards and mobile devices.
