Replacement Hanger Eye Bolts For The Menai Suspension Bridge Refurbishment Project
Brooks Forgings has a proud history of producing forged components for various historical bridge restoration projects, including the Union Chain Bridge in Northumberland and the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.
Our most recent collaboration involved the production and supply of replacement solid steel hanger eye bolts for the restoration of the Menai Suspension Bridge in Anglesey, North Wales.
Replacement Hanger Eye Rods for the Menai Suspension Bridge
The Menai Suspension Bridge, spanning the Menai Strait between Anglesey and the Welsh mainland, was completed in 1826. Designed by Thomas Telford, this Grade I listed structure is an iconic piece of engineering heritage.
Brooks Forgings supplied replacement square-section hanger eye rods, located between the bridge’s north and south main towers across the central suspended span. These components are part of a complex assembly that includes spiral strand and cast clevis hangers, connecting to the bridge’s main upper chain links.
Technical Specifications
The eye rods were crafted from S355-J2 material, with the grain oriented along their length for maximum strength. Key specifications include:
- Length: 1175mm from rod end to eye centre
- Shank: 57mm square section
- Thread: 2.25” BSW over 275mm
- Eye dimensions: 133mm outer diameter with a 62mm concentric hole
